Course Description: Non-Credit Private Piano Study:

Non-credit private study is intended for students of pre-college age as well as adult hobbyists endeavoring to study piano as a personal enrichment activity.

Registration:

All students are to register through Continuing Education at College of DuPage. See the registration codes and guidelines as well as other pertinent information further down in this document.

Course Content:

The goals of private piano study are concentrated in three general areas: technique, keyboard theory and repertoire. Specific assignments are made according to the instructor’s discretion and in accordance with the department curriculum outline.

Studio Policies:

1. Students must register with Continuing Education at College of DuPage. Registration is to be validated by the first week of each semester. Instruction is offered throughout the academic year (fall and spring semesters) as well as the summer session.

2. Lessons will generally be held on school holidays. See the yearly studio calendar for specifics.

3. Private study is a professional arrangement between teacher and student. As such, students assume full responsibility for weekly appointments as they would for classes. A minimum of 24 hours’ notice must be communicated prior to cancellation in order for a student to qualify for a make-up lesson. In such instances, additional appointments will be offered as schedule permits. In the case of emergency or illness, every attempt will be made to reschedule a lesson.

4. Parents of younger students (under 16 years old), are expected to actively share in the responsibilities of piano study by providing: an atmosphere for practice (free of distractions), a consistent practice schedule and routine, support and encouragement in goal-setting and organization of practice, and a well-tuned and regulated piano for daily use.

5. Students are expected to participate in recitals and other events as requested by the teacher.

6. The successful acquisition of artistic skill demands disciplined work. Daily practice is essential to your development as a pianist.

7. In order to maintain the standards of this studio, the teacher reserves the right to dismiss students or refer them to another instructor.

Registration Information:

Non-credit applied music students register for lessons in specifically designated blocks of time. At this time, the registration offerings established by the Continuing Education Department continue to be in a state of development. Students should speak with Dr. Havens to establish a plan of study that will suit individual needs and goals.

Quest Level (30-minute lessons):

Four hours of applied music study *Note: Under this registration option, students of Dr. Havens will attend a total of eight 30-minute lessons over the course of eight-weeks. All non-credit students are asked to register for the Quest Level regardless of musical background. Please speak with Dr. Havens prior to registering. Registration Code: Music-0006, Section 101 PLEASE SPECIFY YOUR INTENT TO REGISTER FOR PIANO STUDY WITH DR. HAVENS.

PLEASE NOTE: The new registration design is crafted as a means of breaking up payment into smaller segments. The Registration Office for Continuing Education divides the 16-week fall and spring semesters into an A and B session (two-8-week segments), and therefore two equal payments. The summer session is comprised of a single 8-week session.

Prior to the start of each term, Dr. Havens puts together a schedule for student lesson based upon mutual agreement. After such a plan is put into place, students are to register through the College of DuPage Continuing Education Division.

Furthermore, once enrolled in applied music study, a student is expected to continue study for at least an entire academic year. This policy will be maintained except in the most highly unusual circumstances.
